Branding is one of the most important pieces to your business because it helps explain clearly to people who you are & what you do as a business. It is much more than a logo. Branding has the power to set your business apart and to make it stand out from the crowd & your competition. Branding is the experience that resonates with your customers. It is your business elevator speech. It can set you up for success or can set you up to fail.

Although, it is so much cheaper and better because you can constantly be putting up fresh content to attract people. You can constantly change your strategy.

Be Consistent With Your Images

Having consistent visuals are very important when branding for your business. Make sure all your images can be connected to each other through some similarity. That similarity might be the subject, the background, the objects that are photographed, how the objects are placed, colors in the photographs, etc.

Oh, and make sure the images you post go along with your business. If you are always on your business account posting cute animal pictures, your business should probably have something to do with animals. If not, save that for your personal account. You are trying to raise brand awareness about your BUSINESS, not your personal interests. 🙂

Be Consistent With Colors & Fonts

Make sure that the colors you choose to use in your images and visuals stay consistent. Make sure they are the same colors in your brand palette. Brand pallets are made up of 4-8 colors that all go along well and play nicely with your logo and imagery. The fonts you use (perhaps on your Instagram quotes) should also stay consistent with each other too. Use no more than 2-3 fonts and make sure they pair well together.

Recently, I had what felt like a minor landslide of overwhelm hit my life. As a life and career coach, I work with clients daily, and I run a podcasting bootcamp class. I recently left my corporate job and rebalanced my son’s time in preschool so he’s home two days a week with me and I work the other three.

It was going great … until …. The water main broke at his school and they closed for two weeks. What felt “doable,” quickly careened into the territory of “too much.”

To juggle work and calls that first week, there was a lot of TV being watched at our house. On Wednesday we went to a pinball Museum for half a day. By Friday (no judging, please) I was pretty frazzled and feeling like I was doing a whole lot, but not doing anything well.

I got so distracted by my son playing with a balloon while in his car seat that I managed scrape my car against our fence while backing out of the driveway on our way to the store.

Overwhelm. It’s that feeling that things are not as you’d like for them to be and that life is out of control. A feeling of anxiety around the amount of things that need to be done, and if you’re like me, anxiety about the things that are not done.

In my own life, and in the lives of my clients, overwhelm seems to be a symptom that comes up when there changes or new things in play in someone’s life. You start a new job, have a baby, take up a new training class, or a new hobby, and what once felt somewhat balanced is now on the precipice being completely out of control.

I’m sure that you have a similar story in your life, somewhere. The moment you realize that you’ve been running too hard and feel that really uncomfortable anxiousness or that kind of screechy, over-caffeinated, can’t focus on any one thing for too long feeling? And then something happens when you’re going too fast, trying to balance it all?

That moment Is a wake-up call. Overwhelm hits (really quite literally and figuratively for me in this example) and we need to slow down and pay attention to what is going on.

Slow down

Overwhelm is a gentle reminder from your mind and body to slow down. If I’d slowed down in my own example above, it’s likely that I would have paid more attention, focused where I needed to focus, and not scraped my car on the fence.

Or, perhaps I would have stopped altogether and paid attention to the things in an order that made more sense and led to a better outcome. Any way it goes, mentally and physically slowing down would have definitely helped my situation.

The irony of being overwhelmed is that it feels like if we just keep moving faster, we’ll get more done, but that’s not usually the truth. Society has become fascinated with multi-tasking and going faster, but the facts show that humans are not good at multi-tasking (each thing actually takes more time instead of less), and that rushing to complete things adds more errors.

By slowing down, I’ve found that I actually get more done. It creates space for me to make conscious decisions about what needs to happen next, about what the priorities are in my day, and to do things well.

As overwhelm hits, slow down. Access the wisdom of your heart and gut or intuition. An interesting fact? Your brain is not the only organ in your body taking in data throughout the day. You actually listen with your heart and your gut or intuition and these organs “think” four times slower than your brain, so slowing down lets you assimilate all of that information before acting.

Look inside, instead of outside, of yourself for what you need.

Maybe you’re a list maker. I certainly am, and I can let my lists rule my day. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, and having one of those “wake up call moments,” treat it as an invitation to stop, breathe, and ask yourself, “What do I really need in this moment? What is the next thing that absolutely needs to be done?”

If you have a list that you’re working from, stop and do a reality check with it. Does everything on there really need to be completed? The answer that comes back might surprise you, or it might be the simple act of checking in, and slowing down, that helps you get to the true next task.

As you start to look at all of the things on your list, question if each thing is needed? What can be removed? What can wait for later?

Focus on you and what you can control

Often times, when overwhelm hits, it’s accompanied by things we can’t control. My son’s school closing is an example. I can’t control that a water main broke outside the building, and it’s good to recognize that as much as I don’t want that to have happened, it’s now something that I have to work with. Putting a lot of time or energy into trying to change it or fight it won’t impact the outcome.

I like what Randy Pausch said in “The Last Lecture” –
“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”

So, once you’ve slowed down and started to look at the situation, note what you can control, and what you can’t. How can you make the most of the pieces you can control? Is there a way to work around the situation? Is there a new way of seeing what’s going on?

A great tool for this is to draw two circles on a piece of paper, one small one in the middle, and a larger one around the outside. In that smaller center circle, write all the things you can control about your current situation. Around the outside, write the things you can’t control. Then start working with what you can control.

Take care of yourself

When life gets overwhelming, another survival trait that comes up for many of my clients is that they stop taking care of themselves in basic ways. When we’re busy, it’s easy to push ourselves to sleep less, to forget to eat meals, to neglect the things that would actually make us feel good.

So an exercise that I encourage clients to try, after slowing down, is to write out the five to ten things that they really, truly need each day. This varies for each person, but some examples are “go for a walk,” “wash my hair,” “call a friend.”

These seem so simple, but, when we get busy and skip them, things feel less easeful. It’s great to have a list to refer back to so when things start to feel overwhelming, you know what to do to get back on track.

You’ve got 2 seconds for your subject line to convince someone to open up your email.

Then you’ve got 4 seconds to convince someone to quickly scan your email instead of trashing it

And if you made it that far, then you have another 4 seconds to convince someone to actually read most of your email or click on your call to action button.

Getting the Open and Click: How to Always Make it Worth Their Time

There are two main goals when it comes to newsletters:

Get your subscribers to open the email (Open rate)
Get your subscribers to follow the call to action (Click-Through Rate)

And to succeed at both goals, you always have to make it worth their time. You can’t buy more time, make more time, or discover a treasure-trove of time. We all have the same limited time supply, and we guard it jealously. So your email has to continually convince us that it’s worth our valuable, limited supply of time.

The first barrier is the 2 seconds you’ve got to prove your email is worth their time. That’s your subject line. Your subject line will have to convince them that what you’ve got inside is worth their time. The second barrier is after they open your email. They are going to scan your email, and in that scan you’ll have 4 seconds to convince them to keep reading and follow your call to action.

So how do you show them it’s worth their time to open the email? It’s easy! Just:

Use These 4 Simple Tactics to Get Everyone to Read Your Emails

There are 4 reasons someone will open an email: relationship, relevancy, value, and curiosity. When writing the subject line of your email, try to at least get 2/4. For example, in your newsletter, you could aim for relevancy and value, or curiosity and relationship. My subheader above is a good example of using relevancy (you’re here to learn about newsletter marketing) and curiosity (wondering what those 4 tactics are).

Relationship

People open emails because they have a relationship with the author of the email. Say your best friend from college sent you an email. You’re going to open that because of your relationship with her. And in fact, because of that relationship you’re probably going to open it immediately and read the whole email. That’s the power of relationship.

Now let’s say you got an email from a person you didn’t recognize. You might open that email, but probably not right away. And depending on the subject line you might not even open it, you might just trash it, assuming it’s spam.

Now, most people on your list will know a bit about you already. But you’re probably not their BFF. But there are some ways to help increase the relationship quota:

Make sure your “from line” is from who they expect. If it’s your business name, then it should be your business. If they know you more than your business name, then it should be from you.

Keep the from line the same for all of your newsletters. It’ll bring familiarity.

Relevancy

People open emails that are relevant to them. For example, a mom selling crocheted baby hats on Etsy is more likely to open the email that says “New Antimicrobial Alpaca Yarn Protects Kids From Nasty Germs” than an email that reads, “Need to Sell More? My Course Will Tell You How!!”

Value

People also open emails because of the high value it might have. “5 Ways to Save 60% on Your Next Shopping Bill.” Someone who has a high grocery bill will open that email because the value is saving a lot of money on their grocery costs.

Curiosity

I bet you know all about clickbait headlines. And the reason you know all about them is because they work. “Here’s What Happened When 6 Corgis Visited A College Campus” and “You Won’t Believe What This Woman Named Her Kid” are examples of clickbait headlines.

People click on those headlines, or open those emails, because they’re terribly curious. What happened when corgis went to the college? Was there a corgi cuddle? What did she name her kid? Was it something awful? I’ve got to know!

Now I’m not advocating you to use clickbait headlines. But I am saying you can learn a lot from them to instill some curiosity in your email subject lines.

Your homework assignment: If you already have a newsletter, I recommend going back to see what your previous subject lines were. Did they have at least 2 of the criteria above? If not, how would you have fixed it? If you haven’t released a newsletter yet, write 3 sample subject lines that you would use to get someone to open your email.

OK, we got you this far. But how do you show them it’s worth their time to read the email and do the call to action? It’s easy! Just:

You’re so vain… you think this newsletter is all about you, don’t you? Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but it’s not. It’s all about the person who reads it. To make sure it’s all about them, not you, remember to:

Use their name often

Make it easy for them to read in a hurry
Make it easy for them to complete the call to action while on their mobile device

Say My Name

Personalization is one of the simplest things you can do with the greatest impact. Emails with personalized subject lines and inner text have a significantly higher open rate. So start your email mentioning their name. Then mention their name again near your call to action.

And Hurry it Up

Your reader doesn’t have all day. You’re lucky enough your subject line convinced them to open your email. Now that you have their attention, hurry up and get to the point. They’re in a rush and they need to be able to figure out what you’re talking about in less than 4 seconds.

Make the main point show up every other paragraph. If you have two paragraphs, it’ll show up once. If your email is super long at 10 paragraph sections, it’s going to show up 5 times. No argument about it.

Add bullet points and line breaks. No big chunks of text. This is an email, not a novella. (Unless your newsletter is actually a novella, then actually, carry on.)

Leave white space around the important stuff. Don’t bury the important stuff in the middle of a paragraph.

Don’t forget to use strategic bolding.

Because I’m on the Run

Seriously, who sits down and reads emails unless they’re at work? Most of us read our emails when we’re waiting in a line at a store, riding the elevator to the top floor, or first thing in the morning while we’re making breakfast. Make sure you write your email for the busy people in life. No long love letters (unless that’s your brand style, of course) and no complicated calls to action—if it can’t be done on their phone, then you need to re-think their call to action.

How to Measure Success

You just learned how to drastically increase the number of people who open and read your emails. But how do you track to see what works best? That’s where the previous email marketing jargon of Open Rate and Click-Through Rate comes into play.

Open Rate: The number of people who opened your email divided by the total size of the email list
Click-Through Rate: The number of people who clicked on your call to action divided by the total number of people who opened the email

To get an idea of what a healthy Open Rate or Click-Through-Rate is for you, view this chart of industry standards for email marketing. Your email provider will let you know what those rates are for all of your emails.

The Most Valuable Email Marketing Tool

Whenever you see a particularly good or bad email metric, go back into your newsletter and find out what may have caused it, and keep that bit of knowledge saved in a notes field or worksheet along with your insights, under a good or bad column. After a few newsletters go out, your document should be full of useful notes.

Good

Subject lines with emojis seem to be opened more

If I put someone’s name next to the call to action more people click the link

Bad

If I have more than 3 sentences together, less people click through

Subject lines with the word free in it actually don’t work as well

By the end of a year, you’ll have the most valuable tool you could ever dream of. A personal cheat sheet of the best ways to write emails for your target audience. Just mix and match down the Good column and write your email.

Running Tests

If you’re looking to go pro with newsletters, consider running tests. Depending on the email marketing platform you’re using, they might have testing built in, usually called A/B Testing.

A/B testing is when you pick two different content pieces and send them out to a portion of your group. Whichever content piece is most successful will then be sent on to the rest of your group.

For example, let’s say you A/B test your subject line.

A: Free Printable! Download Now
B: Check out this super-cute present I made for you

A portion ( typically between 20%-50%) of your newsletter list will get either the first subject line or the second subject line. And for a few hours, the platform monitors the Open Rate of both sets of emails. Then it will declare a winner based on Open Rates, and will send the winning email subject line to the rest of your list.

Pretty cool, huh?

But not every provider does this. For example, the up-and-coming email marketing darling ConvertKit does not offer A/B testing. So what should you do?

Do the testing yourself, of course! If you have a large list, divide it up into 20/20/60. The two 20% sections will get A or B of your email. Wait 4 hours and come back to see the Open Rate or Click Rate. Pick your winner. Then send the winner to the remaining 60% of your group.

And remember, write down what you learned in your newsletter note keeping document!

And That Concludes Newsletter Marketing 101

Now that you have a good grasp on the marketing basics, it’s time to do the hardest thing: writing the email! Just remember when writing, to:

  • Make it worth their time
  • Make it all about them
  • Make it easy to read on the run
  • Make copywriting decisions from your notes on what works and what doesn’t.

The Double Hustle: Managing Your 9-5 Job While Growing Your Business

Making your side hustle a full-time job will take a lot of time and effort that you think you might not have, but we all have a few extra hours in the day if we just take a moment to look.

For me, it was my lunch hour. I used to go the park and sit and read a book for fun. Which, I still do from time to time, but on certain days, that is the only hour I have to work on my business (unless I get up earlier…which my roommates will tell you, doesn’t happen often!).

During that one hour on my lunch break, I can get so much more done than I originally thought. I know I only have an hour and I stay focused. Making lists is a huge thing for me, and being able to cross something off makes me really giddy, so I have become a pro at tackling a few tasks on my list during an hour.

It all starts with planning and time blocking. Do you use a paper planner or an online/app calendar? If not, I suggest starting with a paper calendar and printing a blank template from your computer (or you can get mine here).

Fill in or block out all the time you don’t have available to find your “white spaces”. Have you established goals for the month? If yes, write them down at the top of the calendar. Goals can range from blogging X times a week to setting up X number of client calls per month.

The next step is to look at times you know you have available. I’ve included a shot of my upcoming week.

I found all the white spaces and determined how I wanted to use each space available. Any food blogger will tell you to meal prep on Sundays, so why not BizPrep on Sundays too? If you want to keep Sunday free and clear of business, then I’d recommend using your Friday slot to BizPrep for the next week.

Let’s break it down:

Sunday: write/proof/schedule blog post for the week or client’s work
Monday-Thursday: 12-1p > 1 hour of work (“networking” in online communities, client work, returning emails, etc.)
Friday: 12-1p > Prep for the following week, confirming calls, appointments, and deadlines
Evenings & Saturdays: writing more blog posts and client work

Now that you’ve found your white spaces, break down your monthly goals into action / achievable goals. What do you need to do this week to get you where you want to be next week to get you to your end of month goal? Always keeping your end goal in mind will help motivate you to keep moving forward, even if it is just 30 minutes a day.

Remember, you do not need to fill all of the white spaces with your passion hustle, but if you truly want it to take off, then you will need to work at it every single day.

I work in the real estate industry for my “day job” and one of the biggest mantras I hear is “what you do now will impact your business in 3 months / 90 days.” Where do you want to be in 3 months? What you schedule in your white spaces is one step forward to reaching that goal.

Here are a few other key things to remember:

  1. You need to give yourself limits – working 24/7 is not the dream job. It’s so cliche to say, but “work smarter, not harder.” Running on fumes every day for months on end is not healthy. Use some of your white space as recovery time. Even marathon runners take build recovery days into their training. (See my blank white space on Saturday? TSwift may not be right on this one – don’t always fill that blank space! haha)
  2. This may seem silly but – remember to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner! This is crucial to maintaining a healthy balance (I often remind myself that popcorn doesn’t count)! If I’m home by 6pm, I will eat, do something around the house (I should really start including some exercise!) until 7:30 and then work until 9:30-10p.
  3. Make sure you set boundaries – you don’t need to be answering client emails after midnight. There might not be anything worse than your clients becoming accustomed to late night email threads. Draft that email, and use a tool like Boomerang for Gmail that will send it during your “office hours.”
  4. Don’t work right up until your eyes close – shut your computer off at least 30 minutes before bed, and truly unwind. You will thank yourself in the morning.

I don’t know about you, but for me, coming up with content to share on my social media accounts—that’s beyond sharing my own blog posts—is kinda like pulling teeth. I feel ya. I mean, you’re always creating something, right? You’re writing blog posts, creating shareable images to go with those blog posts, not to mention answering emails, connecting with your peeps inside Facebook, posting to Instagram and Snapchatting like a boss…

But getting consistent with your social media content — that ain’t happening at all and it’s driving you nuts.

If you find yourself scrambling on a Sunday, trying to fill up your social media accounts with awesome content, then you’re gonna love the following process!

How To Create 100 Social Media Posts in One Day

You will definitely need a day to sit down and do this, the process is time-consuming, but it’s worth it to be able to create 100 updates and schedule them all out in advance.

Of course, you could break this up and spread it over a few days, it’s entirely up to you, but I like to knock this out in one day so I’m not worrying about it again until the following month.

Before we start, you’ll need to have access to some tools:

  1. Social Media manager/schedule like Buffer, Hootsuite, CoSchedule, Edgar, etc
  2. Access to an image creation platform like Canva or PicMonkey
  3. A day to set this all up

Now that we’ve ticked these things off, let’s jump into how you’re going to do this.

100 social media updates

Step #1: Content

The first step in this process is to find great content to share with your readers. Of course, your blog posts are a great start, but let’s be honest, you don’t know EVERYTHING there is to know about your topic or what matters to your readers…

A great place to find content you can share with your readers is on aggregators like Feedly and Pocket.

Think about the blogs you follow as well, is their content relevant to your audience too?

Personally, I use Feedly to identify content and then save it to my Pocket, because I can tag different topics and then easily share from there.

So your first task is to create an account with Feedly and Pocket and find content that is relevant to share with your audience and tag it with the appropriate topic (i.e., marketing, email, content creation, etc.)

Step #2: Create a Spreadsheet

Once you’ve got content that you wanna share with your audience, it’s time to create a spreadsheet, or you can grab the “100 Days Spreadsheet” here.

In this spreadsheet you’re going to have six columns, laid out as follows:

  • Number (1-100)
  • Date
  • Social Media Update/Content
  • Category
  • Type
  • Notes
  • Social Media Platform (optional)

Once you’ve got your spreadsheet set up, jump to the next step.

Step #3: Find the Best Parts (Process)

Now that you’ve got content and a spreadsheet set up, we’re going to get down to the nuts and bolts of creating those 100 updates.

The are three different ways to come up with an update:

  • Use a pre-written update
  • Use a prompt to create an update
  • Follow a process (ie, find the best part) to create an update

In this step, we’re focusing on option three, following a process.

The process for finding the best parts to share from the content that you’ve found, looks like this:

  1. In each piece of content, identify 2-3 quotes or phrases that you think would stand out on your social media accounts and resonate with your audience
  2. Turn those quotes into quote images using Canva or PicMonkey, making sure to include a link back to your website or social media profile
  3. Add these updates to your spreadsheet and under “category” tag them as Process and choose the “type” to be image
  4. You can also use some of these to be a text based update as well, so note those in your spreadsheet as well and change the type to “text”

You can apply this same process to your own blog posts as well.

For each direct link that you share, ie, where you’re just linking to the post without creating a quote, write “Check out this post by @person “title” [link]” or “Have you seen this post by @person? Worth a read! “title” [link]” – you’ll get their attention and also they might re-share it with their followers… and you might gain some more followers yourself.

Out of the 100 updates, aim for 20 image quotes and 13 text quotes.

Step #4: Use Prompts

You’re off to a great start, you should have about 33 updates logged into your spreadsheet. But now you’re probably a bit stumped on what to do next…

Enter the prompt ideas! This is my go-to list of prompts that I use to generate even more social media content ideas. Grab the full list below!

100 social media updates

Here’s a sample to get you started:

  • Holiday themed update (Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas, or something like Give a Hug day or Love Your Cat day)
  • Photo – outside of the office, what you see etc
  • Review of your fav apps
  • Simple greeting (hello, good morning, afternoon etc, accompany with a pic?)
  • Shout out to a fav charitable org doing good stuff, particularly if you donate regularly
  • Welcome to newbie followers, likers etc
  • Ask for advice on new movies to watch
  • Ask for advice on new TV shows to watch
  • 5 awesome quotes from your fav mentor/celebrity/coach

This is your time to get creative. Come up with images, even little 90-second videos, particularly if you’re on Instagram or Facebook.

For your 100 updates, use these prompts to come up with 34 updates. Add them to your spreadsheet and note in the category that these are “prompts” and then choose the type as whatever you create… text, photo, link or video.

Step #5: Use Pre-written Updates

For the final part of the process, you’re going to use some pre-written ideas to create another 33-34 updates.

Here’s a sample of these. They are questions to either answer yourself or to ask your followers about:

  1. If you could interview one person in your niche, who would it be?
  2. What would you like to tell you 5th grade self? What advice would you share?
  3. Are you a Mac or PC person?
  4. How often do you update your blog?
  5. What’s the best way to read a book: audio, kindle or hard copy?
  6. Fill in the blank: I laugh every time I think about ______ (you could ask people to fill in the blank too).
  7. What does your desk look like? Take a pic and share it
  8. If I could snap my fingers and be CEO of any company, I’d be CEO of _____.
  9. My favorite holiday is ______ because ______.

100 social media updates

Add these to your spreadsheet and you should now have at least 100 social media updates that you can go ahead and schedule in your chosen social media manager like Buffer or Hootsuite.

Of course, you will probably share more stuff than this and you want to make sure that you’re also sharing stuff that is topical as well. So don’t think that by creating these 100 updates that it means you can’t engage on your social media accounts or continue to share relevant, topical information too.

All that this process does is take away the pressure of coming up with ideas. You still have to manage your accounts and connect and engage.

Creating social media updates doesn’t have to be stressful anymore. Use the ideas provided here to create your own list of ideas that you can schedule well in advance.

Clearly I’m a huge fan of using social media to grow your business (hello, I’m a social media strategist!) but where you can really make an impact is growing your email list.

Increasing your social media following is great, but if tomorrow Instagram decides to start charging you to get in front of your followers what are you going to do? Facebook already doesn’t show your content to all of your followers, and you never know when the other social platforms might follow suit.

But your email list. That’s where the magic happens. You have control of your email list. People have given you permission to go directly into their coveted inbox. It’s an honor to be one of the few selected to be allowed in someone’s email inbox .

There should be a place on each of your social media platforms that drives traffic to sign up for your email list. It is essential to be in your bio, but you can also make specific social updates to drive traffic to your email list as well. Let’s first cover bios.

Facebook

Facebook has a nice little call-to-action box where you can send people directly to your email list sign up page. There are other call-to-action buttons (shop now, contact us, book now, etc), but I like using the sign up now button the most.

Make sure to directly link to your email list sign up page, as most people actually only link it to their website!

Twitter

In my Twitter bio, I explain who I help and link directly to my resource library. This is great for anyone new that stumbles upon by Twitter profile and wants to immediately sign up for my email list. Pinterest

Ways To Integrate Your Email Marketing & Social Media

Melyssa explains exactly who she helps but also drives traffic to sign up for her email list. Since it is a free library of resources, people will be more likely to sign up for it because it is enticing and useful.

Targeted advertising

Did you know that you can upload your email list to Facebook and Twitter and advertise on those platforms to those people? See, most of the time, when someone signs up for your email list, they are most likely using the same email address they use to log into their personal social media platforms.

Facebook and Twitter matches these email addresses with the list you upload, and then gives you a list of people that you can advertise.

You aren’t able to pick out individuals, so there is no privacy issue here. Just really targeted advertising, which is awesome for you brand!

Another bonus, uploading your email list and advertising to those people on social media tends to be cheaper than advertising to complete strangers. This is because this group of people if already familiar with your brand (since they had signed up for your email list) making them a warmer lead than others.

Give a reason for your subscribers to share your content on social media

Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful ways to market your business. This is why people love reading reviews of products on Amazon before they purchase (or is that just me? 😊). People like hearing what other people recommend, so you need to give a reason for your subscribers to share your content with their friends. One of the easiest ways is to get them to share on social media!

You can do this multiple ways, but here is one way I’m going to start to try:

Sometimes, people need to be told what to do. I don’t mean that in a bossy way, but sometimes you just need a nudge to get someone to take action.

Using a Click to Tweet in your email essentially takes the work off of the email subscriber. They don’t have to come up with way to share your content, you’ve already pre-populated a way for them to share your content, making it easy for them to do.

Cross post small bits of email content to social media

Many people think you have to create unique content across all social media platforms, blog, and email newsletter and while you don’t want to copy everything verbatim, you can cross post — if you’re smart about it.

Your email list is where you want people to go right? These people are your biggest fans, allowing you into their email inbox. Thus, they should be receiving some of your best content in those email newsletters.

But you can take bits and pieces from your email newsletter topics, and share them on social media. Then, to entice followers to sign up, you can simply say, “if you want to learn more about XYZ, sign up for my email newsletter where I share ABC!”

You aren’t copying and pasting the same content you share in your email newsletter to your social media followers, you are re-purposing portions of your content to fit into whatever social media platform you may be sharing to.

There are a lot of social media platforms out there and it seems like a new one is gaining attention and traction every few months. It’s hard to know which platforms to hop on to and which are going to waste your time.

If you are a one-person operation, then you don’t have the time to learn and become a master of all the social media platforms all at once.

You don’t want to halfway participate in 5 platforms when you could be excelling at two.

In order to really excel and connect with people on social media then you need to know 3 things:

  • Who your audience is
  • Where they hang out
  • The rules of where they hang out

Now let’s get into how to pick the right social media for your brand.

In order to have a successful blog or online business you really need to know who your target demographic is. Are you appealing to mothers? Business entrepreneurs? Job seeking millennials? Really take a moment to think about who your message is for. Often the main mistake people make when determining their audience is limiting it to like-minded people.

On the other end of the spectrum, some people cast the net too wide and try to connect with everyone and be the brand everyone picks. Obviously, you should have things in common with your audience, like you’ve been where they are or you are where they want to be, but you have to think bigger than that.

Who is your audience?

What is the age range?
What do they use the internet for?
Do you aim more towards a certain gender?
Are you an ambassador for a certain cause?
What are their interests?
What are their goals?
What motivates them?

Create a client profile and write out your ideal client or reader in a detailed description.

If you are a paleo blogger you may not find much success in vegan markets. Really think about the things someone who works with you would like and what they wouldn’t respond to?

Where do they hang out online?

While there are countless social media platforms this exercise focuses on 4 of the most common platforms; Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. These are a great place to start.

Instagram

Image based mobile application. 2015’s fastest growing social network with over 400 million monthly users. Large teenage demographic.

Is your audience teens or millennials?
Does your product or service have a strong visual aspect, like design or art?
Instagram is great for very visual brands trying to reach a younger audience.

Niches that should definitely use Instagram include:

  • Fashion
  • Food
  • Photography
  • Fitness

Things to keep in mind: Instagram’s platform is very limiting when it comes to linking to products. Right now you can only have one active hyperlink in your profile bio. If you are looking for a heavy pick and click strategy you may want to utilize a more linkable format.

Pinterest

Image based online site with a mobile app. Easily shareable content. While the number of male users has increased, 8/10 Pinterest users are female. Pinterest has over 100 million users and growing.

Niches that should definitely use Pinterest include:

  • Food
  • Lifestyle
  • Fashion
  • Fitness
  • Home- Real Estate and Design

Things to keep in mind: While Pinterest does have a promotional platform, there are applications that help your pins become more visible like BoardBooster. Only high-quality pins get good traffic, so you will need to either invest time or money into making the high quality attention-getting graphics.

Twitter

I love Twitter. It’s one of the easiest ways to meet and engage with others. I also like that it limits the characters you can use in a post. It’s a quick, easy summary and then a link to learn more. This is actually a wonderful platform to use to connect with your audience because sharing the content of others and engaging is very easy.

While you can post pictures this isn’t a super image-driven platform. Yes, tweets with images get more engagement but this may not be the ideal platform to focus on for niches like fashion or photography. The hashtags make it easy to get your tweets noticed and find people you want to connect with. Twitter is great for business because you can connect to potential customers on a public forum they already hang out on. You can answer questions, get insights and gain more connections.

Niches that should definitely use Twitter:

  • Business Bloggers
  • Financial Bloggers
  • Lifestyle Bloggers
  • Companies looking to connect with a younger demographic

Things to keep in mind: Twitter is all about pitching as quickly as you can. If what you offer requires lots of explanation this may not be the best way to get new connections.

Facebook

There is a lot of talk about Facebook being over and that with all the constantly changing algorithms and policies that Facebook is only good reconnecting with people from middle school. Trust me, this is not the case. While Facebook is rightfully known for mixing things up on its users it is still a valuable social media platform. Facebook has a lot of the same benefits of Twitter but without the small character limit and options for multiple pictures and graphics.

If you are a blogger, one of the best benefits of using Facebook is connecting with other bloggers in blogger groups. While some say it is a dying platform it is still one of the most populated social media platforms and reaches more age demographics.

Niches that should definitely use Facebook:

Everyone- If another platform fits your brand or audience better, I recommend focusing on that platform then adding Facebook to the mix.

Things to keep in mind: Like any of these platforms, Facebook is heavily governed by its own set of rules. Commit the wrong infraction or if the platform undergoes a major change you could lose your fan base.

Final thoughts

While social media is so important in branding in business, it’s even more important to have a connection with your audience that you can control. Email subscribers are a stronger connection than social media followers.

Your favorite social media platform may not be where your target audience hangs out or where they search for the services you offer. Think like your potential customer not just yourself.

One of the most common stressors I hear from small business owners about social media is how overwhelming it is to continually be posting great content.

From finding high-quality content to share, to creating shareable images, to writing the content…it can be a lot to juggle, especially when you are running a one-woman/man shop.

Over the years of working in social media though, I’ve come up with systems for stressing less with social media. It can take a while to implement these tips, but once you do it can be business (and life) changing.

My Formula For Not Getting Overwhelmed with Social Media

I made it a routine

Every week, I have a certain day and time that I dedicate specifically for social media maintenance and scheduling.

My routine is every Monday and Friday I schedule my content. This includes using a mixture of Hootsuite, Buffer, BoardBooster {affiliate link} to schedule my content across Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Every day in the morning and evening, I set aside a short amount of time to respond back to any comments that come in on any of my platforms.

Having this dedicated time helps me focus on one thing at a time, leaving me free the rest of the week to work on client projects or promoting my own business.

Your routine may look different. Find a schedule that works for you and your business and stick with that.

I have systems set in place

As I mentioned earlier, I use several programs that I use to schedule content. I also have resources I use to gather relevant 3rd party content to share on my social networks as well.

This combination of systems helps me accomplish my social scheduling in a very quick manner.

I use Feedly to organize any content I would want to share on my platforms. All you have to do is log in the RSS feeds from websites that share content relevant to your audience. In my time that I schedule content, I am also quickly reading these 3rd party articles to share on my social platforms.

I took it one profile at a time

When I first launched my business, I wasn’t on every platform.

Yup, a social media strategist wasn’t on every social media platform.

Say whaaaat?!

It’s true. And I deliberately did it that way too. When I first launched, I mainly focused on Pinterest and Twitter. I knew that starting a brand new business at the same time of starting brand new social media accounts that I would feel totally overwhelmed. So I took my own advice and wasn’t on every platform.

I currently am still not on every platform. As you may notice, I don’t have a Facebook page. I currently use Facebook on an individual level, connecting with other business owners in Facebook groups. Will it stay this way forever? Who knows. I can always add in a Facebook page later, when I have the time and capacity to create content for that platform.

I focus on only one platform at a time

When I’m creating content for any of my social media platforms, I strictly only focus on that platforms. If I’m scheduling tweets, that’s the only thing I’m doing.

If I’m creating images for Instagram, you bet your booty I’m only doing that (plus maybe listening to this song on repeat).

It can be easy to get distracted these days but I really try to focus on one thing at a time. I’ve realized that if I focus on one platform at a time, it doesn’t take me nearly as long as I initially think it should to get the task done. Reading the book The One Thing by Gary Keller also helped me focus on one task at a time.

I take it day by day

Some days are busier than others. That’s true no matter what industry you’re in. On days that I know will be super busy, I don’t plan much social scheduling or content creation because I know I don’t have the time.

Taking it one day at a time helps me remember that my social platforms won’t fall apart in a 24 hour period. Because of the systems I have set in place, everything is able to run more smoothly so I can take a few days away from social media.

I don’t focus on the numbers

Having a large following is great but if your followers aren’t engaged it doesn’t really mean much.

Once a month I record my numbers for each social media platform, so I can see how much my audience grew month over month, but besides that I don’t focus at all on the numbers.

I’d much rather have a small, core group of people who are very engaged, than a huge audience that never comments or shares my posts.

I’m not on social media all day

Yep, as a social media strategist even I’m not on social media all day. It can be easy to fall into the deep hole of status updates and DIY pins but I try to limit my time spent on social media.

Much of my work is actually creating the strategy behind the social content. Also, a lot of my content creation is built in other programs (mainly spreadsheets) that I can later use or upload into the schedulers I have.

I try to only be on social media in the time blocks that I’ve set aside. Of course there are times when I get sucked in, but I try to limit it each week.

I remind myself I’m connecting with other people, just like me

Many time people forget why their business is on social media in the first place. You’re on social media because you want to be social with your audience. People want to be accepted and loved by other people, and when I remind myself of that, it makes it easier for me to craft updates.

I think of how I would want a brand or business to connect with me on a personal level, and then craft my content based on that.

This means I share a bit of my personal side on Instagram, that I tweet about not only business and social media advice, but engage with other small business owners just as friends.

I talk like I would in person

It’s easy to talk about your business in person, isn’t it? There’s something about the connection with another human being that makes it much easier to talk about your passion for you small business than it is to write it out.

Any time I’m creating content for social media, I try to think about how I would actually say it in person. I imagine speaking directly with another person, and how I would share this blog post or this product that I have. Talking like myself makes it less overwhelming to create content, because it’s just like talking to a friend.

I don’t compare myself to others

You can play the comparison game all day long, but it doesn’t get you anywhere. If you spent all the time you do comparing yourself to everyone else to actually something productive for your business, it would make a huge impact.

It’s easy to continue to strive to do better, and we all should try to do better, but don’t compare yourself to someone else’s step 10, when you’re only at step 5. It takes time to grow an engaged social media presence.

Think of the parts of your life that are consistent. Perhaps you consistently work out or maybe you are a consistent reader. Those tasks may seem easy to you, because you do them day in, day out.

What if social media could become one of those tasks that you just do, without thinking about it? Without dreading the feeling of having to create content, share a photo on Instagram, or send out a tweet?

To truly start seeing success on social media, your small business will need to have a consistent presence. As they say, consistency breeds success, and don’t you want to be successful on social media?

You will feel less stressed

Being consistent may seem like it takes a lot of work and that you would feel even more stressed because you are sharing more content, but that is certainly not the case.

Being consistent allowed me the freedom of knowing exactly what to expect of myself each week with social media. This led me to feel less stressed and more in control because I knew the steps I needed to take each week to be consistent on my platforms.

Your followers will increase significantly

My followers across all platforms increased significantly once I was more consistent on social media. For example, my Twitter and Pinterest accounts grew a combined 53% over the last four months because I made it a goal to set a routine for sharing content on both platforms.

People can recognize if you consistently update your accounts with new content, and they will begin to have an understanding of what to expect from your account. This makes you more reliable in your follower’s eyes and will increase your number of followers, which leads to increased reach of your content.

You will see more engagement on your platforms

Once people see that you are active on your accounts, they will be less afraid to actually reach out to you to comment on your posts or share your content with others. People want to share content with their followers that they know is reliable and if they see you consistently sharing awesome content, they will become more comfortable with commenting and sharing.

You will earn more money

One of the reasons you are on social media as a small business in the first place is to connect with more customers. Showing that you can be consistent with social media not only shares your products on a routine basis, but it also shows you are stable.

People want to buy from stable, steady people. They want to know that you will deliver with what you say you will, whether it be a product or a service you provide.

An additional benefit of being consistent is that you will continuously be promoting your products or services on your platforms. This will constantly be driving traffic back to your website.

You will develop deeper connections with your followers

If you’re anything like me, I connect with a business not only because of what the business offers, but more so who the people are behind the business.

Showing up regularly on your social platforms will make it known to your followers that you’re here to stay. Building an engaged following takes time, but over the course of that time, you will slowly develop a deep connection with your followers.

They will tell you exactly what the want/don’t want, what they like/don’t like, and will be your biggest fans if you frequently show up and participate on your social platforms.

You are more likely to do social media if it’s part of your routine

I’m assuming everyone reading this post brushes their teeth, right? You probably brush your teeth to upkeep personal hygiene but you also do it because it’s part of your routine. You’ve been brushing your teeth since you were a child because your parents helped make it a routine for you.

The same goes for social media for your business. We are all creature of habit so we do a lot of the same things day in, day out. If you make social media a part of your daily routine, you are more likely to actually do it (and maybe even enjoy it!).

There is a comfort in having a routine. You know exactly what to expect because you’ve done the same thing every day.

It’s easy to brush your teeth, because you’ve been doing it every day of your life. Social media can also become easier if you make it a part of your daily routine.
